The national chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has awarded a $600,000 grant to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for a study to begin Oct. 1.

The “translational research” grant will fund the three-year study to be conducted by Dr. David A. Williams, director of the Division of Experimental Hematology and associate chairman for translational research for Cincinnati Children’s; Dr. Yi Zheng, program leader for the center’s Signaling Program; and Dr. Jose Cancela, director of the center’s Stem Cell Program in Experimental Hematology and director of research for Hoxworth Blood Center.
The grant will allow the researchers to study the effects of the Rac GTPase protein in chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML. They will modify or eliminate the Rac protein both in test tubes and on mice to see the effect on the progression of the disease.
The researchers’ hypothesis is that elimination of the Rac protein in those with this form of leukemia will slow the progression of the disease. If the hypothesis is correct, the team is hopeful that an effective anti-CML drug may be developed for the treatment of myelogenous leukemia patients.
